A representative of the cooperative visited the Nordic country as part of a European project led by Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de España.
The AIRA cooperative has just learned about the strategy followed by the Finnish dairy sector to reduce its emissions and promote the circular economy through biomethane, among other measures.
Specifically, on September 15, a representative of AIRA visited the Nordic country as part of the COOPID project(COOPeration of bioeconomy clusters for bio-based knowledge transfer via Innovative Dissemination techniques in the primary production sector), an initiative led and coordinated by Cooperativas Agro-Alimentarias de España, to learn about the measures taken by the Finnish dairy sector to reduce its emissions.
The aim of the project, in which other leading Spanish dairy cooperatives such as Central Lechera Asturiana and COVAP also participate, is to disseminate good agri-food practices for the reduction of the carbon footprint from the primary sector, with a view to their implementation and adaptation to the reality of each region.
To learn about the experience of the farms
In this case, two farms of the VALIO cooperative, which collects and processes 80% of Finland’s milk, were visited. These farms use biomethane produced mostly from manure and farm waste to generate heat and electricity and/or its subsequent purification to compressed biogas for use in adapted vehicles. Specifically, the biomethane produced on the farms supplies CBG-adapted private cars and Valio’s milk collection tankers in that Finnish region.
Likewise, the delegation in which AIRA participated studied the “Zero Carbon Footprint – 2035” strategy that the Valio cooperative is following in order to achieve its neutrality between emissions and carbon fixation in that year.
