Contagious Nodular Dermatosis (DNC) is a viral disease that exclusively affects cattle. Already detected in countries such as Italy and France, there is a real risk of its entry into Galicia, so health authorities insist on the need to maximize preventive measures.
What is DNC?
CWD is caused by a virus of the Poxviridae family, which affects cattle and causes skin lesions (nodules), fever, loss of body condition and a significant reduction in milk production. It does not pose any risk to human health, nor is it transmitted through the consumption of meat or milk.
Transmission routes
The disease can be transmitted by:
- Bites of insect vectors (flies, mosquitoes, carracha).
- Direct contact between infected animals.
- Contaminated vehicles, material or persons.
Symptoms to watch for
Cattlemen should be on the lookout for signs such as:
- High fever. Nodules on the skin, mucous membranes or udder.
- Inflammation of the lymph nodes.
- Decrease in milk production and weight loss.
In case of any suspicion, it is essential to contact our veterinary service immediately.
Preventive measures
- Avoid, to the extent possible, the purchase or transfer of livestock from affected areas.
- Ensure rigorous cleaning and disinfection of transport vehicles.
- Maintain excellent hygienic conditions on the farm.
- Use repellents or insecticides in times of high insect presence.
- Increase daily surveillance of the herd.
Consequences of a positive detection
The DNC is a notifiable disease. In the case of a positive detection, strict measures are applied such as sanitary depopulation and immobilization of cattle within a radius of 20 km, which means a strong economic impact for the affected farms and their environment.
It is important to emphasize that CDN does not pose any risk to human health, nor is it transmitted through the consumption of dairy or meat products.
